Cause:
Acidic water or ‘low pH’ water is caused primarily by carbon dioxide. As water passes around impenetrable rock and non-dissolving solids, it leaves the water acidic or ‘aggressive’. Acidic water is destructive to plumbing, water heaters, seals and diaphragms, water appliances and metal fixtures. It will create small pinhole leaks in piping that can go un-noticed until the damage is costly to repair. In addition, acidic water can damage silverware or other metal products when washed in dishwashers.
Acidic water is usually measured in pH, on a scale of 1 to 14. Water at 7.0 is a neutral balance between acidic and alkaline. Water below 7.0 is acidic and water above 7.0 is alkaline.
