Bacteria
Cause:

Bacterial contamination can result from a number of sources including human and animal waste. Run-off from pastures and other land where animal waste is deposited can enter well systems, streams or river water sources. Other sources may include open water supply sources, holding tanks, old well systems vulnerable to surface water run-off or casing leaks and shallow or surface water well systems. These bacteria can find their way into the drinking water supply.

Coliform bacteria is most common, and can be an indicator of additional bacteria that can cause disease. Since complete bacterial testing is impractical, the EPA has designated total coliform as the standard for determining the bacterial safety of water.

E.coli is a fecal coliform bacteria commonly associated with human and animal waste. The presence of E.coli in drinking water is a strong indication of sewage or animal waste contamination.

Symptoms:
  • Bacterial contamination of the water supply cannot be detected by sight, smell or taste. The only effective method of identification if laboratory is testing.
  • The most common health effects of coliform or E.coli infection are abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Other, more serious health effects are possible.

Owners of private wells are responsible for the testing and treatment of the water supply to insure it is safe from bacteria and meets potable drinking water standards. On home purchases, lending agencies generally require private water supplies be tested for Coliform and E.coli before home loans or re-financing is approved.

Solution:

Several methods of treatment are available if bacteria is present.

1. Shock Chlorination of the well and household plumbing is one option. This does not insure the bacteria will not return.

2. Ongoing chlorine injection and removal systems insure ongoing elimination of bacteria from the water supply.

3. Ultra-violet Light system consisting of a carbon pre-filter and ultra-violet light system, rated for flow and water usage requirements. This method requires less maintenance than the injection system and provides ongoing elimination.

EcoWater Northwest offers Coliform and E.coli testing including on-site water sampling using lab approved vessels and sample procedures and outside certified lab testing and reporting.

We can review and customize the treatment options available as part of our free on-site anaylsis.
