Cause:
Lead is one of the most common contaminants found in tap water. Lead in drinking water usually originates from the pipes between the street and the household faucet. Older pipes may be lead lined and often contain lead solder. Brass fixtures can contain 8% or more lead content. These pipes and fixtures can leach lead into the water supply. Lead can also enter your water supply from other industrial waste such as batteries, paint etc.
According to the EPA there is no acceptable level of lead in the drinking water supply and that any level may cause some adverse health effects, particularly in small children.
Lead is a cumulative poison, accumulating in the body until it reaches toxic levels. Absorbed through the skin, lungs and digestive tract, lead can have negative health effects even at low levels. |
