Cause:
A naturally occurring mineral usually found along with dissolved iron in private wells or municipal water supplies. It causes problems similar to iron and is often mistaken for iron due to its dark staining. Recent studies are raising concerns about Manganese toxicity from water supplies.
Although exact toxicity levels have not been determined, a new study from the School of Medicine at Wake Forest suggests that inhalation of water vapor containing manganese in the shower can cause permanent nervous system damage. Exposure in a 10 minute shower exposes you to 50 times the level that causes nervous system damage to laboratory rats.
Symptoms:
- Black sediment.
- Blackish turbidity.
- Brown or black staining in sinks and basins.
