Cause:
The sulfur odor found in a high percentage of well water in the Northwest is most likely caused by a Sulfate Reducing Bacteria (SRB) in the well water. The bacteria produce a Sulfide gas that can make your water taste and smell like rotten eggs or sulfur. SRB can accumulate and grow in wells, pumps and household piping, forming a black mucous-like slime that can clog filtering systems. SRB does not pose a health hazard. | |

The level of odor can vary depending upon the degree of bacterial presence. In addition, presence of the odor may vary from water faucet-to-faucet depending upon where the bacteria are present. If you detect odor only in the hot water, the heating element (anode rod) in your water heater may be the cause, however, keep in mind the bacteria tend to the warm water piping.
Symptoms:
- Sulfur or rotten egg odor from the water
- Black, mucous-like substance found on the walls of your toilet tank
Solution:
Chlorination is the most effective method for eliminating the bacteria and resulting odor.
There are several methods of chlorination, from Shock Chlorination of the well to Ongoing Chlorine Injection and Removal, depending on the degree of bacteria and odor.
